Recently Completed: A Research Protocol
Using a New Endosurgical Operating System for Endoscopic
Stoma and Pouch Reduction in Patients with Weight Regain
Following Roux-en-Y Bypass Surgery
The Mount Sinai Program for Surgical Weight Loss
recently completed a study evaluating a new less invasive
surgical option to treat weight regain in post-gastric
bypass patients. Most gastric bypass patients obtain
excellent weight loss after gastric bypass surgery.
Some patients, however, experience some weight regain
years after their bypass surgery. Such weight regain
may be caused by an enlarged pouch or stoma (the connection
between the stomach pouch and intestine).
We used an FDA-cleared endoscopic instrument
to decrease pouch and stoma size in order to improve
weight loss. The technique does not require surgical
incisions. Rather, the endoscopic suturing device is
introduced through the mouth like an upper endoscopy.
Sutures are placed in the stomach pouch to reduce the
size of the gastric pouch.
The results of the study were favorable,
and will be presented at the upcoming meeting of the
American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
(ASMBS).

Mount Sinai Medical Center is an
ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence!
On July 25th, 2006, The Mount
Sinai Program for Surgical Weight Loss, the Program’s
bariatric surgeons Daniel Herron, MD and Subhash Kini,
MD, and The Mount Sinai Hospital were named as an American
Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS)
Center of Excellence. Earning this prestigious
acknowledgement of excellence in bariatric surgery required
meeting high standards set forth by the ASBS, and this
designation recognizes the safety, efficiency and overall
positive surgical results of the bariatric surgical
team at Mount Sinai. Read the Press
Release for more information.
