J. Joseph De Simone, PhD
Clinical Psychologist
Background
Dr.
J. Joseph De Simone is a clinical psychologist who has
worked closely with the Mount Sinai Program for Surgical
Weight Loss since its inception in 1999. In addition
to conducting psychological evaluations for bariatric
surgery candidates, Dr. De Simone provides pre- and
post-surgical psychotherapy treatment as needed. He
also serves as a regular guest speaker at the monthly
Mount Sinai bariatric support groups.
Of note, Dr. De Simone recently initiated
a bariatric psychotherapy group for post-surgical bariatric
patients. This group was specifically created to address
issues of psychological adjustment following significant
weight loss. For information in participating in this

Education and Board Certification
Dr. De Simone received his doctoral training
at Long Island University and interned at St. Vincent’s
Hospital & Medical Center. He is currently licensed
as a psychologist in the State of New York and is a
member of both the American Psychological Association
and the New York State Psychological Association (Addiction
division). He is listed in the National Register of
Health Service Providers in Psychology.
Bariatric Psychiatry
Experience
Over the course
of his more than 20-year career, Dr. De Simone has been
involved in clinical practice, research, publishing,
and teaching. He is currently in fulltime private practice
and specializes in the treatment of addictive disorders,
personality disorders, relationship issues, and mood/anxiety
disorders.
